Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell

Unlike the regular fossil fuel powered SLS AMG its electric sibling Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell is powered by four electric engines. One for each wheel of this exotic two-seater coupe. The result is a supercar with 526 horse power and 649 lb-ft of torque. Thats 10% less power than in a 6.3 liter V-8 SLS AMG engine. This allows SLS AMG E-Cell to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.0 seconds, slightly slower than 3.8 seconds in regular SLS. The 0-130 mph acceleration fits in 12 seconds.
SLS AMG E-Cell aluminum spaceframe remains the same as in the petrol powered SLS. The suspension, however, was modified to accommodate the four electric motors. According to the Mercedes the handling of this electric supercar will be completely the same as in the regular SLS.
E-Cell's problem is the capacity of its batteries. Currently this concept prototype has a 48-kWh lithium-ion battery, but the plans are to have a 60-kWh battery ready for the future customers. The current maximum range this ride can reach is up to 90 miles, but with the new battery installed, hopefully, it will reach 130 miles. It takes approximately an hour to recharge the battery to full.
Currently the plans are to start selling SLS AMG E-Cell by late 2012 or by early 2013, a few months later than its most fierceful rival - Audi's E-Tron (electric supercar based on Audi R8). The expected price is $50,000 to $100,000 over the petrol powered SLS AMG. E-Cell is a limited production supercar and it will not be available to the masses. Only a few hand-picked celebrities and famous people will be offered to buy one.
